The goal of this project is to design a environmental friendly washing machine. This washing machine also does little damage to the clothes and has a very simple user interface.
This washing machine design mimic hand-washing action with its silicone drum. The revolutionary silicone drum design leaves clothes undamaged and saves water in the washing and drying process. Xiaoro is designed by George Duan and Boya Zhao, two designers from RISD.
Japanese Style Washing machine
This is a top loading washing machine. Clothes are cleaned by the torus in the water and rubbing of the paddles on the bottom of the basket. This kind of machine uses a lot of electricity when the heavy basket with water and clothes changes the spinning direction frequently. It also need a lot of water to submerge the clothes. However, it does a good job cleaning the clothes with even cold water. The rubbing action between the clothes and the paddles can do some damage to clothes.
American Style Washing machine
The American style washing machine is very similar to the Japanese style washing machine. This washing machine has a extra rod shape agitator in the center of the basket. The agitator increase the washing strength, but it usually causes clothes tangled around the rod, and does damages to the clothes.
European Style Washing machine
This is a front loading washing machine. Clothes are lifted to the top of basket, then dropped back to the bottom. This kind of washing machine uses the dropping action to clean clothes. It does very little damages to the clothes, but it takes much longer to clean the clothes. European style washing machines need warm water to effectively clean the clothes.
Xiaoro is using new structure and system that makes doing laundry saves electricity, water and does less damage to clothes. After studying the characteristic of european style washing machine and japanese washing machine, we came out this concept washing machine that uses a silicon bag structure. the size of the bag changes according to the amount of clothes that were put in. The waster used in each cycle also changes according to the amount of clothes. the ring shape structure surrounding the silicon bag travels up and down along the bag to squeeze and message the silicon bag. The ting shape structure mimics hand washing rubbing motion and replaces the spinning motion in traditional washing machine. Therefore, this washing machine saves a lot energy from accelerating in the spinning motion. During the drying cycle, a vacuum sucks the water out from the bag, and squeezes the clothes dry. This can reduce the large amount of energy that were used in the fast spinning drying cycle in a traditional washing machine. The silicon bag does little damage to the clothes by avoiding the direct rubbing between machine and the clothes that happens in american and Japanese style washing machine. This washing machine uses a minimum user interface. spinning the black circle part around the front button to adjust the washing time,the time is display by the projection on the wall from the back of the washing machine. Pressing the middle pink button to start or to pause the washing cycle, other settings are automatically adjusted by the machine according to the weight of the clothes.
